MSNBC to Hire Over 100 Journalists Amid Split from NBC News
MSNBC is preparing for a major transformation as it separates from NBC News, gearing up to build its own independent newsroom. As part of this shift, the network has announced plans to hire more than 100 journalists, including field producers, correspondents, and photographers, to strengthen its news operations.

Veteran Journalist Scott Matthews Joins as Senior VP of Newsgathering
Leading this expansion will be Scott Matthews, a seasoned news executive with experience at CNBC, WABC, CNN, and other major media outlets. Starting March 17, Matthews will serve as Senior Vice President of Newsgathering, overseeing MSNBC’s editorial and production teams. His responsibilities will include managing the assignment desk, coordinating breaking news coverage, and setting editorial priorities to enhance the network’s reach in domestic, Washington, and international reporting.
A New Era for MSNBC
This move comes as MSNBC prepares to operate independently from NBC News, following a planned 2025 spin-off of NBCUniversal’s cable assets, including CNBC and E!, into a new publicly traded company. As traditional cable TV faces challenges from streaming platforms and cord-cutting trends, MSNBC is investing in its own newsgathering infrastructure to remain competitive.
"Scott’s role reflects our vision to expand MSNBC’s presence in the field," said MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler in a memo to staff. "We are committed to growing our domestic and international coverage while building a stronger newsroom for the future."
Scott Matthews’ Background in News Leadership
Before joining MSNBC, Matthews served as Vice President and News Director at Disney’s WABC New York, where he oversaw news operations, digital platforms, and special coverage in collaboration with ABC News. From 2011 to 2019, he was Vice President of News Specials at CNBC, leading breaking news coverage, investigative reports, and the creation of original programming, including the hit series Secret Lives of the Super Rich. His experience also includes roles at CNN, WNYW, WWOR, WTXF, and WFXT.
What’s Next for MSNBC?
With this expansion, MSNBC is taking a bold step toward becoming a more self-sufficient news organization, ensuring it remains a key player in the evolving media landscape. The network’s decision to invest in original reporting and on-the-ground journalism signals a commitment to delivering in-depth, high-quality news coverage to its audience.
