Scholarship Fund Established in Memory of University of Alabama Student, Lauren Alexis Whinery
The University of Alabama remembers Lauren Alexis Whinery with a $50,000 scholarship fund to support deserving students, continuing her legacy of academic excellence.
The University of Alabama community is mourning the unexpected passing of 20-year-old student Lauren Alexis Whinery, whose life and legacy have inspired the creation of a scholarship fund in her name. The fund, with a goal of $50,000, seeks to honor her memory and continue her mission of academic excellence.
As of August 18, the GoFundMe campaign for the Lauren Whinery Scholarship Fund has attracted 95 donors, raising $9,220. Whinery, a marketing major with minors in sales and global and cultural perspectives, was known for her dedication to her studies and her leadership in various campus organizations.
Originally from Cape Coral, Florida, Whinery was a high achiever from a young age. She graduated with high academic honors from Prairie High School in Iowa in 2022. At the University of Alabama, her academic prowess continued, earning her a place on the President’s List for the Spring Semester of 2024—a distinction awarded to students with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The scholarship fund aims to support a deserving student at the University of Alabama each year, with additional support directed towards Prairie High School, where Whinery’s academic journey began.
In addition to her academic accomplishments, Whinery was deeply involved in campus life. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, Delta Sigma Pi, Professional Women in Communication and Business, Globe UA, and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. Her involvement in these organizations reflected her commitment to community and leadership.
“Lauren’s dedication to fostering a sense of belonging and her genuine care for others were evident in her sorority membership,” reads the GoFundMe page, highlighting her impact on those around her.
The final of three memorial services for Whinery is scheduled for 10 a.m. on August 24 at the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority house in Tuscaloosa, where friends and family will gather to celebrate her life.
