Tragic Fatal Crash on I-65 in Shelby County Leads to Roadway Closure
A 70-year-old man was killed in a crash on I-65 in Shelby County, prompting a temporary closure for investigation. Traffic has been detoured to Highway 31.
A fatal crash on Interstate 65 in Shelby County has resulted in a temporary road closure as authorities conduct their investigation.
Lowell Sibley, a 70-year-old resident of Oneonta, was traveling southbound on I-65 near Alabaster when his vehicle was struck by another car around 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The collision occurred about a mile north of Alabaster.
Sibley, driving a Nissan Frontier, was hit by a Chevrolet Blazer driven by 37-year-old Tristan M. Rose of Maylene. The impact caused the Nissan Frontier to overturn multiple times.
Tragically, Sibley was not wearing a seat belt during the crash. He was transported to Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, confirmed Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans.
As a result of the accident, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced that all southbound lanes of I-65 between exit 242 in Pelham and exit 238 in Alabaster were closed starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. This closure is to facilitate a thorough investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Traffic has been redirected to Highway 31 until further notice.
This incident marks the second fatality on I-65 in Shelby County within the span of two days.
