Birmingham Apartment Shooting Leaves One Dead, Another Injured; Two Children Unharmed

A late-night shooting in Birmingham’s Collegeville housing community resulted in one fatality and one serious injury. Remarkably, two young children present in the apartment were unharmed.

The shooting occurred around 11:55 p.m. on Saturday at an apartment on 30th Avenue North. When police arrived, they discovered a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. The man, identified as 35-year-old Brandon Lee, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transported to UAB Hospital with critical injuries.

Initial reports suggest that the shooting stemmed from an argument between individuals who were known to each other. The dispute may have begun on the social audio app Clubhouse, where users could hear both the argument and the subsequent gunfire live.

The suspect, who was shot in return fire, was found at UAB Hospital around 1:40 a.m. Sunday with non-life-threatening injuries. He is currently under police custody at the hospital and faces charges of capital murder and attempted murder.

The two children, who were asleep during the incident, were later released to relatives. Police have praised the Birmingham Housing Authority’s investment in security cameras, which significantly aided the investigation.

Brandon Lee’s death marks the 98th homicide in Birmingham this year. Across Jefferson County, the total number of homicides stands at 123, with eight deemed justifiable.
