Bo Nix, the Denver Broncos' first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is navigating the pressures of his rookie season while vying for the starting quarterback position. But there’s one challenge that Nix can't escape—his rookie duties, enforced by veteran quarterback Jarrett Stidham.

Selected 12th overall on April 25, Nix has the potential to lead the Broncos as their starting quarterback. Yet, his rookie status is a constant reminder, thanks to Stidham, who ensures Nix remains grounded.

“Bo’s got to carry our pads,” Stidham shared with a grin on Wednesday. “It’s a rookie must-do. If something goes wrong, he’s the go-to blame. Back when I was a rookie, Tom (Brady) gave me a haircut as initiation—that’s not allowed anymore. We’re not big on snacks, so he’s off the hook there. But if I forget something, Bo’s the one running back to get it.”

Stidham didn’t stop there, hinting at more rookie rites of passage. “We’ve got a rookie dinner planned, and trust me, I’m getting a top-notch bottle of wine, courtesy of Bo. I’ll be walking out of that dinner very satisfied.”

Despite not overlapping at Auburn, Nix succeeded Stidham as the Tigers’ quarterback, and now, they share the Broncos’ locker room. Stidham, who served as Russell Wilson’s backup last season and started the final two games, makes sure Nix fulfills his rookie responsibilities, regardless of how the rookie feels about it.

“Whether he likes it or not, Bo doesn’t have much choice,” Stidham remarked. “He might push back a little, but I remind him, ‘We’ve all been through this before.’ Especially as a first-rounder, he’s got to do his part.”

With Russell Wilson released and Zach Wilson brought in from the Jets, the Broncos have set the stage for a three-way competition between Stidham, Nix, and Wilson for the starting quarterback spot. Stidham, ever the veteran, finds humor in the situation.

“I tease Bo and Zach about their rookie contracts all the time,” Stidham said, chuckling. “They’ve earned more in a few months than I have in my entire career so far. I make sure they know they’re not off the hook.”

As the Broncos prepare to face the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener on Sunday, all eyes will be on this quarterback competition. Stidham is set to start the game, with Nix and Wilson following in what promises to be an exciting contest. Kickoff is at noon CDT, and the game will be broadcast on NFL Network.
