Why Germie Bernard Joined Kalen DeBoer at Alabama Football

Germie Bernard's decision to follow Kalen DeBoer from Washington to Alabama football was straightforward and driven by a clear vision of success.

“I didn’t need to think twice about it,” Bernard explained. “Kalen DeBoer’s track record speaks for itself. Everywhere he’s coached, he’s built winning teams. His offensive strategies are dynamic and effective, which is exactly what I wanted to be part of.”

In the 2023 season, Bernard played under DeBoer at Washington, where the team reached the College Football Playoff and narrowly lost to Michigan in the national championship. During the season, Bernard appeared in 14 games, starting seven, and recorded 34 receptions for 419 yards, including two touchdowns and two rushing scores.

The Las Vegas native, a junior, had previously spent the 2022 season with Michigan State. At Washington, Bernard was part of a formidable receiver group alongside Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk, and Jalen McMillan—all of whom were selected in the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Bernard's transition to Alabama was also influenced by his experience with JaMarcus Shephard, the receivers coach who joined DeBoer in the move. Shephard’s impact was a significant factor in Bernard's decision to transfer.
