Nick Saban Responds to Florida State Fans Upset Over CFP Snub
Nick Saban addresses the controversy surrounding Florida State's exclusion from the College Football Playoff (CFP), emphasizing that neither he nor ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit had a role in the decision. This article simplifies the discussion and reactions from fans.
Nick Saban had a message for Florida State fans, both in Dublin, Ireland, and those watching ESPN's "College GameDay" on Saturday.
"I want Kirk Herbstreit to know, I got a thousand phone calls when we made it to the playoffs," Saban said during his debut on ESPN's pregame show. "He didn't have anything to do with them not getting in, and neither did I. But we both got blamed."
Despite Saban's words, the Florida State fans weren't convinced.
Whenever Herbstreit spoke, Florida State fans booed him loudly.
Last year, Florida State had an undefeated season but was left out of the College Football Playoff. Instead, Saban's one-loss Alabama team was chosen.
Herbstreit supported the decision made by the CFP, which led to Florida State fans targeting him with criticism.
Pat McAfee, another ESPN analyst, sympathized with Saban, saying, "You didn't deserve those calls. Another team you beat, Georgia, probably thought they should've made the playoffs too. They were the defending national champions and only lost one game, but Florida State fans felt they were treated unfairly."
McAfee was referring to Alabama's 27-24 victory over Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.
