Laptop Stops Bullet After Gun Discharges in Alabama Second Grader’s Backpack
Authorities in Huntsville, Alabama, have completed their investigation into an incident where a firearm discharged inside a second grader’s backpack at Challenger Elementary School on February 6. Fortunately, no one was injured, thanks to an unexpected layer of protection—a laptop inside another student’s backpack.

Incident Details
According to the Huntsville Police Department (HPD), the gun went off while inside the child’s backpack. The bullet exited the bag, striking another student’s backpack. However, instead of causing harm, the bullet was stopped by the student’s laptop, which absorbed the impact. School staff immediately assessed the situation, and the school nurse checked the student involved, confirming there were no injuries.
Investigation Findings
Despite thorough questioning, investigators were unable to determine how the firearm ended up in the young student's backpack. The child was unable to provide an explanation, and no further evidence was found to clarify how the weapon was placed there.
As part of protocol, the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) was notified to assess the child’s home environment and ensure safety measures were in place.
Legal Outcome
Huntsville police filed two case reports—one for unlawful possession of a pistol by a minor and another for reckless endangerment. However, after consulting with the Madison County District Attorney’s Office, authorities decided not to press charges against the second grader for possessing the firearm.
The victim’s family has been referred to the Neaves Davis Center for legal guidance regarding the reckless endangerment aspect of the case.
Community Response
The incident has sparked discussions about gun safety and school security. While no criminal charges were filed against the child, the event underscores the importance of firearm storage and awareness to prevent similar situations in the future.
Authorities continue to urge parents and guardians to securely store firearms and educate children about the dangers of handling weapons.
