JD Davison Re-Signs with Boston Celtics on Two-Way Contract
JD Davison, a two-time Alabama Mr. Basketball, will return to the Boston Celtics for the 2024-25 season, having signed another two-way contract with the NBA team. The Celtics made the announcement on Monday afternoon.
Drafted in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft, Davison has spent most of his time with the Maine Celtics, Boston's NBA G League affiliate, under a two-way contract. This contract type allows NBA teams to have three additional players beyond the standard 15-man roster. Two-way players can shuttle between the NBA team and its G League affiliate without passing through waivers, reducing the risk of other teams claiming them.
During the 2023-24 season, Davison appeared in eight NBA games for Boston, tallying 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists over 39 minutes of play. In contrast, he played 49 games for Maine, where he averaged 21.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 8.8 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. His performance earned him a spot on the All-NBA G League Third Team.
Despite not receiving a qualifying offer from Boston by the end of June, Davison became a free agent before quickly re-signing with the Celtics on a two-way deal. He is set to participate in the NBA 2K25 Summer League in Las Vegas, with Boston's first game scheduled against the Miami Heat at 5:30 p.m. CDT on Saturday.
Davison's impressive high school career includes winning Alabama’s Mr. Basketball Award in both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons while leading the Calhoun School in Letohatchee to consecutive AHSAA Class 2A championships. As a junior, he averaged 33.4 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game, followed by 32.4 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game as a senior. At Alabama, he posted averages of 8.5 points, 4.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game in his single collegiate season.
