Hoover Football Coach Drew Gilmer Placed on Administrative Leave Amid Investigation
Hoover City Schools announces the administrative leave of head football coach Drew Gilmer and defensive coordinator Adam Helms for an impartial investigation.
Hoover City Schools announced today that head football coach Drew Gilmer and defensive coordinator Adam Helms have been placed on administrative leave. This decision aims to facilitate a thorough and unbiased review of recent events.
"The safety and well-being of our students and staff are top priorities," stated Superintendent Dr. Kevin Maddox in the release. "We are committed to addressing this matter seriously and resolving it both promptly and fairly."
The statement also mentioned that parents, students, and staff would be kept informed of any major developments as the investigation progresses.
On Tuesday afternoon, videos surfaced on social media showing some concerning behavior by certain coaches during a recent Hoover practice. When asked about these videos, Gilmer, who was hired in January from Clay-Chalkville to replace Wade Waldrop, declined to comment. He did not respond to further inquiries.
The Hoover Buccaneers are set to kick off their season on August 24 in a national showcase against Western, Florida. Gilmer, who spent the last eight years at Clay-Chalkville, led the team to two of the last three 6A titles, boasting an 81-12 record. His 2023 team went undefeated, culminating in a championship victory over Saraland.
Hoover quarterback Mac Beason and other players expressed their support for Gilmer on social media. Beason noted that Gilmer’s unique coaching style contributes to his success, while defensive back Tre Darden emphasized that their rigorous coaching methods bring out the best in players.
As of now, there has been no response from Hoover athletic director Harley Lamey or Hoover City Schools interim public information officer Bryan Phillips regarding the current leadership of the Buccaneers or the future of Gilmer and Helms.
