A Huntsville man has been taken into custody and charged with murder following a fatal shooting on Monday evening.

According to Huntsville Police, 22-year-old Byron Alexander Peterson was arrested in connection with the death of 53-year-old Demetrius Jones. Authorities responded to a shooting at 240 Martin Road shortly after 6 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Jones suffering from gunshot wounds at the doorway of his apartment. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the Major Crimes Unit revealed that Jones and Peterson, both residents of the same apartment complex, had been involved in a longstanding dispute. The confrontation escalated when Peterson went to Jones’ apartment, leading to the shooting. Police quickly located Peterson in a nearby apartment and took him into custody.

As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities recovered firearms from both Jones’ and Peterson’s apartments. The case remains under active review as investigators work to piece together the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
