A Birmingham man has been arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation into the smuggling of contraband into state prisons.
Authorities with the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) SWAT team executed a search warrant at a home in Ensley on Monday, officials announced Thursday.
Christopher Needham, 41, was taken into custody at the residence. During the raid, law enforcement seized drugs and firearms. ADOC spokeswoman Kelly Windham Butts confirmed the search was related to the trafficking of contraband into prisons but did not provide further details.
Needham faces multiple charges, including unlawful distribution of marijuana, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, trafficking in methamphetamine, and possession of an altered firearm.
He was booked into Jefferson County Jail at 8:22 a.m. Monday and later released on a $100,000 bond at approximately 7 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming.
