Woman Killed in Shooting Captured on Facebook Live After Apartment Fight
A woman was killed in a shooting captured live on Facebook after a fight at a Birmingham apartment complex. Police are seeking information and videos related to the incident.
A big fight at an east Birmingham apartment complex ended in a fatal shooting, which was broadcast live on Facebook.
The victim, Asia Alyce Poole, was a 21-year-old mother. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity.
According to Mayor Randall Woodfin, “Last night, a fight on private property at Valley Brook apartments turned deadly with a lot of gunfire. A young mother was killed.”
The mayor added, “The shooters have two choices: turn themselves in to Birmingham police immediately or be tracked down by BPD and U.S. Marshals.”
The altercation occurred at Monarch Ridge apartments on Gallant Drive, previously known as Valley Brook.
The live video showed Poole in a fight with several people. The fight started near a car in the parking lot, then moved to a breezeway in an apartment building, and ended with a burst of gunfire.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said that East Precinct officers were called to the complex around 10 p.m. Tuesday for reports of gunshots and later found Poole unresponsive in or near the parking lot. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced her dead at 10:31 p.m.
Poole had streamed her own live video from the parking lot just before the fight and shooting began. The distressing cries of her brother and sister were heard in the videos after the shooting.
Another person, a man, was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Wade said that the fight seemed to calm down when it moved to the breezeway, but gunshots soon followed.
Initially, 36 shell casings were found, but that number increased significantly as the investigation continued. The shell casings were found in two clusters in the parking lot.
Videos showed even more gunshots, with witnesses saying it sounded like hundreds.
After the shooting, Poole’s Ford sedan was stolen, as seen in the video. It wasn’t clear if the car was running when she left it or how the thief got in. The abandoned vehicle was later found at J Wings on Center Point Parkway.
No arrests have been made yet.
Wade noted that while it’s frustrating that no one intervened during the fight, the video surveillance is valuable for the investigation. “It’s concerning that many people didn’t step in to prevent this. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family.”
Poole is the 102nd homicide victim in the city this year and the second on Tuesday. Of the 102 homicides, eight have been deemed justifiable and not criminal.
Jefferson County has seen 129 homicides this year, including the 102 in Birmingham.
Police are asking anyone with information or additional videos of the incident to contact detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
