According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the suspects—Peter Walcott, Malik Chambers, Romario Nembhard, and Jermaine Smith—are either current or former Baldwin County residents and Jamaican nationals legally residing in the U.S.

Court documents reveal that between February 2020 and August 2023, the four men orchestrated a fraudulent scheme that tricked victims, many of them elderly, into believing they had won lottery prizes. The victims were instructed to send cash payments under the guise of covering “taxes” on their winnings. Over 100 shipments of cash were sent to fake names and addresses controlled by the scammers.

The suspects now face serious federal charges, including mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit both. If convicted, they could each face up to 20 years in prison.

Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the scam and urge the public to remain cautious of lottery fraud schemes.
