Taylor Swift fans are celebrating Kamala Harris' running mate, Tim Walz, as a certified 'Swiftie VP'
Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, and the decision has sparked excitement among Taylor Swift fans. On social media, many Swifties are celebrating Walz, calling him "one of us" due to his past enthusiasm for Swift.
Walz, known for his support of Swift, had tweeted about the Eras Tour and declared two "Taylor Swift Days" in Minnesota last year. After Ticketmaster's problematic handling of Swift's Eras Tour sale in November 2022, Walz shared a photo of his cat looking distressed, captioned, "Afton after being online all day and not getting Taylor Swift tickets." This resonated with Swift’s fans, who were already upset by the ticketing issues.
In response to these ticketing frustrations, Walz advocated for consumer rights and anti-monopoly measures, and he later signed the "Taylor Swift Bill" into law in Minnesota. This legislation aims to increase transparency and protect consumers buying tickets online.
Swifties were also pleased when Walz declared June 23 and 24 as "Taylor Swift Days" in Minnesota, celebrating the singer's Eras Tour stop at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. In a document shared on social media, Walz made references to several of Swift's popular songs, including “All Too Well,” “Wildest Dreams,” “Mastermind,” “Lover,” and “The 1.”
The fan account @Swifties4Kamala, which seeks to rally Swift's fan base and support Harris’ campaign, reacted positively to Walz’s selection. They used a familiar Swift lyric strategy, exclaiming, “A proclamation for 'Taylor Swift Days'? That's our man!”
Many fans echoed this enthusiasm online, calling Walz a "confirmed Swiftie" and expressing their approval. One fan celebrated by posting, "SWIFTIE VP!! TICKETMASTER COUNT YOUR DAYS BABYYYYY!!!!!!" which garnered over 43,000 likes.
In tribute to Walz, some Swifties crafted friendship bracelets, inspired by the lyrics from Swift’s song “You’re on Your Own, Kid.” One bracelet read, “Long live the Walz,” referencing the song’s lyric, "Long live the walls we crashed through."
Walz’s support extends beyond Swift; last year, he also declared July 20 as "Beyoncé Day" in Minnesota to honor Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, earning praise from the Beyhive. Beyoncé later gave Harris permission to use her song "Freedom" at campaign events after providing tickets to her tour.
While Swift has not yet endorsed Harris or made a public statement about the 2024 election, she endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 and criticized President Donald Trump for "stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism."
