Philadelphia Eagles Sign Former Alabama Defensive Tackle Byron Young After Waiver Claim
Philadelphia Eagles sign former Alabama defensive tackle Byron Young after waiver claim from Las Vegas Raiders. Young joins four other Alabama alumni on the Eagles' roster.
The Philadelphia Eagles have added former Alabama defensive tackle Byron Young to their roster after claiming him off waivers. Young will reunite with four of his former Alabama teammates who are already on the Eagles' roster: guard Landon Dickerson, cornerback Eli Ricks, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, and offensive tackle Tyler Steen.
Young was released by the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday and picked up by the Eagles on Thursday. To make room for Young on their 53-man roster, the Eagles waived defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu, who had been listed as a backup to Jordan Davis.
Young initially survived the Raiders' roster cuts from preseason to the regular-season limit on Tuesday. However, after the Raiders added defensive back Thomas Harper and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu through waiver claims on Wednesday, Young was waived to create space for the new players.
Drafted by the Raiders in the third round last season as the No. 70 overall pick, Young did not see much playing time as a rookie. He appeared in six games, recording four tackles over 99 defensive snaps and 13 special-teams plays. This preseason, Young played 83 defensive snaps, made three tackles, recorded one sack, and broke up one pass.
The Eagles now have five Alabama alumni on their roster, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, who did not play with Young at Alabama.
Philadelphia will kick off their 2024 season against the Green Bay Packers at 7:15 p.m. CDT on September 6 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
