Opelika Police Fatally Shoot Armed Suspect in Early Morning Incident
An officer-involved shooting in Opelika led to the death of an armed suspect at Century Park Apartments. The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
In the early hours of Sunday, an officer-involved shooting in Opelika resulted in the death of a suspect who was reportedly armed.
At approximately 3:07 a.m., Opelika police responded to a call regarding a suspicious situation at Century Park Apartments, located on Century Boulevard. Upon arrival, the responding officer encountered an individual armed with a firearm, according to police reports.
A confrontation ensued between the officer and the armed person, culminating in the officer discharging their weapon. Despite immediate medical assistance provided at the scene, the suspect was pronounced dead. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
The officer involved in the incident did not sustain any injuries.
As per protocol in cases of officer-involved shootings, the State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation. Once the inquiry is concluded, the gathered evidence will be submitted to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
