Man Fatally Shot in Broad Daylight at Birmingham Housing Complex: Police Seek Help
Man shot and killed in Birmingham's Collegeville housing community in broad daylight. The suspect approached the victim without provocation. Police seek public assistance for information.
A man was shot and killed in broad daylight on Friday at a busy public housing complex in Birmingham.
The incident occurred just after noon on the 3000 block of 32nd Avenue North, near the entrance of the Collegeville complex. According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, police from the North Precinct arrived to find the man lying on the sidewalk, shot several times.
Residents reported hearing numerous gunshots, causing some to take cover inside their homes. Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported the 33-year-old victim to UAB Hospital, but he died on the way.
Early investigations suggest the gunman approached the victim and began shooting without any clear reason. “From what witnesses told us, it was unprovoked," Fitzgerald said. "The suspect simply walked up, shot the victim, and left."
Authorities are still working to confirm if the victim had any connection to Collegeville or if he knew the suspect. “There was no argument or confrontation,” Fitzgerald explained. “The suspect appeared to be on a mission.”
No arrests have been made yet. Police are hopeful that surveillance cameras installed by the Birmingham Housing Authority and footage from the department’s Real Time Crime Center will provide critical leads.
Fitzgerald urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, saying, “We cannot stress enough how important it is to share what you know.”
This tragic event follows another shooting at the same complex just over a month ago, where a man was killed, and a woman was injured.
This marks Birmingham’s 113th homicide this year. Out of these, eight have been ruled justifiable, and two deaths occurred in previous years but were recorded in 2024. Jefferson County has seen a total of 145 homicides this year, including those in Birmingham.
