Man collapses, dies in east Birmingham shed after being shot during an argument

A midday shooting in an east Birmingham neighborhood on Friday left one man dead.

Just before 12:30 p.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to the 8300 block of Fourth Avenue North following reports of a person shot. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim inside a shed behind an abandoned house adjacent to East Lake Park. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene, though his identity has not yet been released.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade reported that the victim was visiting someone at a home in the 8200 block of Fourth Avenue North. An altercation erupted between him and another visitor at that residence, leading to the suspect firing several shots. Police later found shell casings on the roadway.

The victim managed to run just over a block before collapsing in the shed, where a bystander called 911. Wade noted that the details of the argument remain unclear.

This incident marks Birmingham’s 129th homicide of the year, with nine of those ruled justifiable. Additionally, two homicides from previous years have resulted in deaths this year. In total, Jefferson County has recorded 163 homicides, including the 129 in Birmingham.
