DeBoer’s Strategy for Successful Recruiting in the South
When Kalen DeBoer took over as head coach of Alabama football following Nick Saban's retirement, one question was on everyone's mind: Can DeBoer recruit in the South?
Having primarily coached in the Midwest and occasionally on the West Coast, DeBoer had no experience recruiting in the Southern states. Despite the skepticism, DeBoer, alongside general manager Courtney Morgan and their team, swiftly demonstrated their capabilities.
As of Wednesday, Alabama boasts the No. 1 recruiting class for 2025 according to On3's industry rankings, outpacing Ohio State, Georgia, Oregon, LSU, and all other national contenders.
During the SEC Media Days in Dallas, DeBoer shared insights into his recruiting approach and the factors behind his success.
"I knew it was crucial to surround myself with the right people," DeBoer said. "While I emphasize building relationships and connecting with players to make them feel part of our program, I recognize the importance of regional familiarity."
To address this, DeBoer ensured his staff included members well-acquainted with the Southern region, while fostering a cohesive team environment.
"Our staff operates with an all-hands-on-deck mentality," DeBoer explained. "Within our building, there's a strong sense of teamwork. We have dedicated individuals, both on and off the field, who tirelessly build relationships and attract top talent to our campus."
DeBoer also emphasized the positive team culture and vibrant atmosphere that prospective recruits experience when visiting.
"They see something they want to be a part of," DeBoer said. "Our early success is a result of this collective effort. Recruiting is an ongoing process, but having the right people in our program continually enhances our coaching abilities in numerous ways."
