Kalen DeBoer Talks Success, Lessons From Losses, and Leading Alabama Football
Kalen DeBoer shares his thoughts on success, lessons from past losses, and the pressure of following Nick Saban as Alabama's new head coach. He reflects on the journey and expectations while leading the Crimson Tide.
Kalen DeBoer, Alabama's new football coach, recently sat down for an interview with Fox’s Tom Rinaldi. During the conversation, DeBoer shared insights on his coaching journey, including his thoughts on success and the lessons he’s learned from the few losses in his career.
With an impressive record of 106 wins and only 12 losses, DeBoer explained that the losses are what stick with him the most. He can still recall the score of each one. "I remember all 12 losses," DeBoer said. "In 2005, we lost 55-0 in a national semifinal game. But the next year, we came back and won the national championship. Those are the moments that teach you to keep fighting and pushing forward."
Taking Over at Alabama
DeBoer is stepping into a program known for its success under Nick Saban, who led Alabama to six national championships. Despite the pressure, DeBoer says his expectations for himself are just as high as those placed on him by others. "It's about keeping the coaches and players moving in the right direction," DeBoer said. "You have to keep working through it and stay focused."
He also acknowledged that while nothing compares to Alabama's football legacy, he's ready for the challenge. "I’ve had a good taste of success, but Alabama is on another level."
Memorable Alabama Moments
DeBoer shared a few experiences from his early days at Alabama. One of the standout moments was his arrival in Alabama with his family, where he felt the passion and excitement of the fans.
When asked about the pressure of following Nick Saban, DeBoer said it was more about honoring Alabama's long-standing football pedigree. "The history here started a long time ago," he said.
He also laughed off an incident where Chris Stewart mistakenly called him "Coach Saban" during a radio show. "I took it as a compliment," DeBoer said with a smile.
Thoughts from Other Experts
Urban Meyer, who coached national championship teams at Florida and Ohio State, weighed in on the challenge of following a legendary coach. "I followed Steve Spurrier at Florida, and it's tough. Kalen DeBoer will always live in Nick Saban's shadow, but that’s just the way it is."
Mark Ingram, a former player under Saban, also expressed confidence in DeBoer. "He understands Alabama’s culture and expectations. He’s a player’s coach, and he knows how to lead the team to success."
Alabama’s game against Wisconsin will kick off at 11 a.m. Central on Fox.
