A Hueytown man has been found guilty of murdering a 45-year-old man who was trying to stop a fight at a wake in Montevallo.
On Thursday, a Shelby County jury convicted 34-year-old Corey Antwon Broadnax for the shooting death of Shante Hudson.
The shooting occurred on the night of February 11, 2023, at a gathering on Melton Street. Police arrived to find Hudson, from Bessemer, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Shelby Baptist Medical Center but was declared dead shortly after.
Hudson was related to Broadnax’s estranged wife. When Hudson tried to break up a fight between Broadnax and his wife, Broadnax shot him eight times.
Shelby County District Attorney Matt Casey said, “Mr. Broadnax’s senseless shooting of Mr. Hudson was tragic for the Hudson family. We hope this conviction provides some closure and sends a strong message against violence in our community.”
The Montevallo Police Department investigated the case, and it was prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney Ben Fuller and Assistant District Attorney Sara Beth Eldridge.
Broadnax's sentencing date is not yet set. Due to two previous felony convictions, he faces a sentence of 99 years to life imprisonment under Alabama’s Habitual Felony Offender Act.
Hudson, a Montevallo High School graduate and Jefferson State Community College attendee, served in the U.S. Army until he retired. He worked at U.S. Steel in Fairfield for 13 years before joining the U.S. Postal Service.
