College football season predictions: Picks for who makes playoff, wins title and more USA TODAY

If crystal balls could truly predict the future, the college football season would be devoid of debate, with outcomes clearly defined and discussions subdued. Fortunately, that’s not the case. As we navigate a new era of expanded College Football Playoff and conference realignment, uncertainty abounds, and no one can confidently forecast how things will unfold.

Last year brought its share of surprises, with Washington and Texas making the playoff while two-time defending champion Georgia was left out. This season is equally unpredictable. How will Oklahoma and Texas fare in the SEC? Can Michigan overcome the loss of Jim Harbaugh and become national title contenders again? Will the addition of four Pac-12 schools significantly shift the power dynamics in the Big Ten?

On the individual front, Caleb Williams was aiming for a repeat Heisman Trophy but fell short of making it to New York. This year’s Heisman race is open, with only two contenders—Ollie Gordon III and Jalen Milroe—finishing among the top 10 last season.

With numerous coaching changes, many established coaches are on the hot seat, while new hires are under immediate pressure, including Kalen DeBoer at Alabama, Mike Elko at Texas A&M, and Jedd Fisch at Washington.

So, what does the season have in store? That’s where USA TODAY Sports comes in. We’re here to offer our predictions for the season ahead.

Who will make the College Football Playoff?

Who will win the national championship?

**Scooby Axson:** Ohio State. This year, it’s the Big Ten/SEC invitational, and the Buckeyes’ now-or-never mentality will lead them to victory. They’ll lift the trophy in Atlanta, where they faced their last playoff disappointment in a loss to Georgia two seasons ago.

**Erick Smith:** Georgia. After missing the playoffs last season, Georgia, fueled by a wealth of talent amassed under Kirby Smart, is hard to bet against. The Bulldogs boast an elite quarterback, a formidable offensive line, top-notch skill players, and a dominant defense. They might drop a game during the regular season or in the SEC title game, but they are well-equipped to navigate the expanded playoff system.

**Eddie Timanus:** Ohio State. While it's unlikely any team will finish the season unscathed, Ohio State’s passionate fan base will have plenty to discuss. The Buckeyes are expected to reach the Big Ten championship game, secure a top-two playoff seed, and emerge victorious in a classic championship showdown.

**Dan Wolken:** Ohio State. This feels like the year for Ohio State to finally break through. With motivation, talent, and returning experience, they’re set to excel both in the regular season and the playoffs. Ryan Day is poised to lead the Buckeyes to a championship.

**Heisman Trophy Predictions**

**Scooby Axson:** Dillon Gabriel, Oregon. With 49 starts under his belt and a strong supporting cast, Gabriel is poised to put up impressive numbers. As the Ducks make their push toward the playoffs, the spotlight will shine on the sixth-year quarterback.

**Mendoza:** Jalen Milroe, Alabama. Milroe’s second-half surge last season continues into 2024. Under new coach Kalen DeBoer, his passing game and dynamic running ability make him a significant threat. Expect plenty of Heisman-worthy moments from Milroe.

**Myerberg:** Quinn Ewers, Texas. Ewers, backed by the most talented Longhorns team in over a decade, is well-positioned for a standout season. If Texas meets expectations and makes the playoffs, Ewers will likely rise to the top of the Heisman race. Staying healthy will be crucial, as injuries have plagued him in recent seasons.

**Smith:** Carson Beck, Georgia. If Georgia is the top team this season, their standout player, Carson Beck, will be a leading Heisman contender. Beck had a solid debut season and is expected to be even better in 2024.

**Timanus:** Jalen Milroe, Alabama. Milroe’s clutch performances last season and his continued success under Kalen DeBoer will make him a strong Heisman candidate. A standout performance in the SEC title game will likely secure the award for him.

**Wolken:** Carson Beck, Georgia. With Georgia likely to be the top team for most of the year, Beck will benefit from putting up impressive numbers. Surrounded by a talented roster, he has the perfect ingredients for a Heisman-winning season.
