Minnesota Vikings Sign Former Alabama High School Star Bobby McCain
Bobby McCain, a defensive back and former standout from Oxford High School in Alabama, has been signed by the Minnesota Vikings after being out of football since December 16. The Vikings announced the signing on Monday following McCain's workout with the team on Sunday. The terms of the contract were not disclosed.
The Vikings are facing significant injuries in their secondary, prompting the addition of McCain. Key cornerbacks Mekhi Blackmon and Shaquill Griffin, projected as top players for the 2024 season alongside Byron Murphy, are both sidelined. Blackmon is out for the season with a torn ACL sustained in the first full-team practice of training camp, and Griffin is dealing with leg issues. Additionally, rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson, a fourth-round draft pick, tragically passed away in a traffic accident on July 6.
McCain's familiarity with Minnesota’s defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who coached him during his time with the Miami Dolphins in 2019 and 2020, played a role in his signing. Flores expressed enthusiasm about McCain’s arrival, praising his intelligence, physicality, versatility, leadership, and communication skills.
“Love Bobby,” Flores said on Monday. “Bobby loves playing football. He’s smart. He’s physical. He’s played multiple positions over the course of his career. Lot of familiarity. He’s got leadership, for sure. Communicates well. And I was excited that we had an opportunity to get him. I’m glad he’s here.”
McCain’s NFL journey began when he was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Memphis, where he was a four-year starter at cornerback. Initially, McCain played as a slot corner for the Dolphins before becoming a regular starter at outside corner in 2018 and then shifting to safety in 2019 and 2020.
In 2022, McCain started 16 games for the Washington Commanders before signing with the New York Giants as a free agent in March 2023. However, his time with the Giants saw limited defensive action, playing just 19 snaps across two games while contributing significantly on special teams with 119 plays. He was released by the Giants on December 16.
Throughout his nine-season NFL career, McCain has played in 130 regular-season games, recording 394 tackles, 11 interceptions, 12 tackles for loss, four sacks, and two forced fumbles. He has accumulated 5,942 defensive snaps and 828 special-teams plays.
The Vikings will begin their three-game preseason schedule on August 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders, with the regular season set to start on September 8 against the Giants.
