Birmingham Pastry Chef Crafts Graffiti-Themed Cake for Chris Brown Before Sold-Out Show

R&B sensation Chris Brown enjoyed a custom four-layer graffiti-style cake from Birmingham's own pastry artist, Kristal Bryant, before taking the stage at the BJCC on Thursday night.

Kristal Bryant, the talented head pastry chef and owner of K&J’s Elegant Pastries, designed the cake specifically for the famed singer.

“I did a lot of research on what he might enjoy in a cake. He likes to draw and paint, so I decided to incorporate some of his artwork into edible images,” Bryant shared.

The cake featured the tour’s logo and a galaxy theme. “I read online that he loves strawberry cheesecake, so the bottom layer is a vanilla cake with strawberry filling and cheesecake chunks. The middle tier was Oreo cookie and cream, and the top layer was vanilla. I also collaborated with Andrea Smith, who created a ‘Breezy in Bham’ sign with lights for the topper. I wanted something spectacular to make the cake stand out,” Bryant explained.

Bryant is a preferred dessert vendor for Sodexo, the catering company at the BJCC. This cake marked her first creation for an artist at the concert venue. She hopes to deliver cakes to Nicki Minaj and Sexxy Red during their upcoming fall tour dates in Birmingham.

Thursday night’s performance was Brown’s first in Birmingham since 2014. According to Sam South, Communications Director for the BJCC, the show at Legacy Arena sold out quickly when tickets went on sale in March, drawing over 10,000 fans.
