Birmingham Man Acquitted of Double Murder in Alabama After Self-Defense Claim
A Birmingham man, previously charged in multiple homicides including the death of a toddler, was acquitted of capital murder in a double shooting after claiming self-defense. The case involved a fatal 2022 incident in Alabama.
A 28-year-old man from Birmingham, Alabama, named Dmarrco Harris, was found not guilty of capital murder in a case involving the deaths of two men. A Jefferson County jury made the decision on Thursday, agreeing with Harris's claim that he acted in self-defense during the 2022 shootings.
Previously, Harris had faced charges for two other murders, including the death of a toddler. He was originally charged with murder in the killing of Roderick Mariachi Williams and attempted murder for shooting Antwain Lamar Lewis, Jr. However, when Lewis died earlier this year from complications related to the gunshot wound, the charges were upgraded to capital murder for the death of two or more people in the same incident.
The shootings took place on April 29, 2022. Police arrived at the scene in the 4200 block of Second Avenue South at 10:53 p.m. They found Williams unresponsive on a staircase at an apartment complex, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Lewis was found lying on the sidewalk and was taken to UAB Hospital. After being released from the hospital, Lewis went home to Adamsville, where he passed away on January 25, 2024.
The case took a turn when Harris posted a video on Facebook Live, showing the victims and explaining that they had been trying to kill him for 10 years. In the video, Harris mentioned that the dispute started over a dice game, and he claimed self-defense, saying there was a $20,000 "hit" on him.
Harris had also been charged with the murder of 40-year-old Urian Dion Woods, who was found shot at Birmingham’s Marconi Park on April 24, 2022. Woods was taken to UAB Hospital but died shortly after. However, prosecutors later dropped the charges against Harris in this case, citing a lack of evidence.
Additionally, Harris was one of four men charged in the 2017 shooting that killed 2-year-old Ron’Narius “Duke” Austin and wounded his mother, Shay Austin. The shooting occurred while they were driving home from a family gathering. The charges against Harris and the others were eventually dismissed.
Harris had been in the Jefferson County Jail since 2022 but was released from custody on Friday after being acquitted of the charges.
