After dominating Birmingham's skyline for over a year, Alexander Shunnarah's iconic billboard is set to be replaced. The prominent "Call Me Alabama!" attorney's advertisement will be removed from its prime location atop the Two North 20th Building, one of the state's largest billboards.
Laurel, Mississippi-based advertising firm Trailhead Media announced that the new billboard will feature an advertisement for Alabama A&M University. This change will last for at least the next nine months, according to Trailhead Media CEO Randy Otto. The new advertisement will be installed "as soon as wind and weather permits," Otto stated.
Efforts to reach Shunnarah for his comments on the change were unsuccessful.
The 179-by-25-foot sign, perched atop the 17-story building on Morris Avenue, has been a landmark in Birmingham's skyline for over 50 years. Originally an electronic sign with more than 1,330 lights displaying various messages, it went dark in 1988. The sign was briefly reactivated in 1996 and 2001 before being sold in 2013.
