A tragic ATV accident in Lawrence County claims the life of a 65-year-old Decatur man.
Larry D. Whitlock, 65, of Decatur, died in a single-vehicle ATV crash on a peaceful Friday night in rural Lawrence County.

About four miles west of the tiny hamlet of Trinity, Whitlock's 2001 Honda Rancher drove off County Road 362 and caused the tragic collision, according to Alabama State Troopers. Whitlock was reportedly ejected from the ATV when it collided with a ditch and crashed. At the scene, he was declared dead.
The incident took place during that blue hour when fields turn golden and shadows lengthen as evening descends over the countryside. What ought to have been a routine journey over a well-known route took a deadly turn that nobody anticipated.
Troopers from the Highway Patrol Division of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are still looking into what caused the collision. No other vehicles were engaged at this time, and there is no suspicion of foul play.
Whitlock's untimely death highlights the frequently disregarded dangers of using recreational and utility vehicles, particularly on country roads where the terrain can quickly change from benign to dangerous.
This terrible death serves as a sobering reminder that ATVs can be harsh machines, even for skilled riders. In addition to talent, they demand constant attention to detail, and even then, the land humbles us.
Friends and family are left to grieve for a guy who, by all accounts, died unexpectedly while performing a familiar task in a location he knew while the inquiry was ongoing.
