Umpire Nick Mahrley carted off after broken bat hits his neck during Yankees-Rockies game

During the New York Yankees vs. Colorado Rockies game on Sunday, a frightening incident occurred when home plate umpire Nick Mahrley was struck in the neck by a broken bat and had to be carted off the field.

The accident took place in the bottom of the fifth inning at Yankee Stadium. Giancarlo Stanton was at bat when his swing shattered the bat, sending a fragment directly into Mahrley's mask and neck. Mahrley immediately collapsed, prompting Rockies catcher Drew Romo to rush over to check on him. Stanton, who had managed a bloop hit from the broken bat, also came over to offer his concern.

Medical personnel quickly arrived and attended to Mahrley. He was fitted with a neck brace, placed on a stretcher, and then carted off the field. The Rockies offered their support to Mahrley through social media.

Crew chief Marvin Hudson, who was stationed at first base, moved to take over behind the plate, while second base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt shifted from second base to first base. Should Mahrley need to miss additional games due to the injury, part-time replacements from Triple-A can be called up to fill in for him.
