South Bay K-9 Ronin passes after terminal cancer diagnosis
(KRON) — The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of K-9 Ronin, who recently succumbed to terminal cancer. Ronin passed away on Tuesday and was honored with a multi-agency procession as a final farewell.
After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Ronin's condition rapidly declined, making it impossible for him to continue performing the duties he loved, according to the sheriff’s office. “His health deteriorated, and he was no longer able to carry out his daily tasks,” the SCCSO stated.
With the loss of use in his hind legs, the decision was made to euthanize Ronin.
“This is an incredibly emotional and heartbreaking time for the Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Gonzalez,” the SCCSO added. Deputy Gonzalez had been Ronin’s handler since 2020.
"K-9 Ronin will always be remembered," the sheriff's office stated. "His dedication, care, and protection have made a lasting impact on Santa Clara County."
During his service with the SCCSO, Ronin was involved in over 500 critical incident deployments and took part in many community events.
The San Jose Police Department, Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, Santa Clara Police Department, and Campbell Police Department joined the sheriff's office in honoring Ronin with a procession and final farewell.
