Quan began his music career in 2011 and gained mainstream recognition with his 2013 hit “Type of Way.”
According to Rolling Stone, his death has been confirmed by a family member, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.
TMZ reports that Quan’s family is “shattered and heartbroken” over his passing.
Born Dequantes Lamar in Atlanta, Georgia, in October 1989, Quan attended Ronald McNair Sr High School and initially aspired to be a professional baseball player. His skills as a center fielder and leadoff hitter earned him a scholarship to Fort Valley State University, but he left after two weeks due to tuition costs.
Lamar later worked at an airport, but after losing his job, he became involved in burglaries and spent 15 months in jail.

His 2013 hit single “Type of Way” garnered mainstream recognition, and he followed up with another success, “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” in 2015.
By that time, he had joined forces with Cash Money Records founder Birdman and rapper Young Thug to form Rich Gang. Their collaboration produced the hit “Lifestyle” in 2014.
In November 2016, Lamar filed a $2 million lawsuit against his former label, Think It’s A Game, over alleged unpaid royalties. The label countersued for breach of contract, but both lawsuits were eventually settled out of court.
In 2017, Lamar signed with Motown Records and released his debut studio album, *Rich as in Spirit*, in 2018. The album featured rapper Rick Ross and included singles “Changed” and “34.” It debuted at number 32 on the Billboard 200 chart.
His final full-length mixtape, *Family & Mula — Reloaded*, came out in 2022.
Tributes have poured in from fellow artists. Playboi Carti shared multiple pictures and videos of Lamar on his Instagram Stories. On X/Twitter, R&B singer Jacquees wrote: “Rest in Peace my brother Rich Homie Quan. I love you for Life.”
Migos rapper Quavo posted a photo of himself with former bandmate Takeoff, who passed away in 2022, along with Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, and Offset. He captioned it: “May God be with US never saw this being apart of our journey.”
2 Chainz also paid tribute on Instagram, writing: “Dam lil brother, we just spoke about shooting a video. Special prayer for you and your family, and pray for any and everybody that’s dealing with something. My condolences, bru.”
