Woman wanted in shooting outside Texas police station in custody after standoff on I-65 in Autauga County

A Georgia woman wanted in connection with a shooting in Texas has been taken into custody following an hours-long standoff on Interstate 65 in Autauga County on Friday.

Alabama State Troopers identified her as 39-year-old Choima Agurd from Lawrenceville. She faces charges in Alabama for felony attempting to elude and in Texas for aggravated assault of a family member and aggravated assault of a police officer. Agurd is currently held at the Montgomery County Detention Center.

According to Bellaire, Texas police, dispatchers received a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. on Friday about a woman in a Mercedes SUV pursuing a group in a Ford truck. The occupants of the truck reported that the woman was the ex-girlfriend of one of the passengers and was believed to be armed.

The Ford truck arrived in front of the Bellaire Police Department, seemingly to avoid a confrontation. As two marked patrol cars approached the scene, Agurd circled to the passenger side of the truck and opened fire, hitting the front seat passenger. One of the Bellaire officers then returned fire as Agurd fled westbound on Jessamine toward Chimney Rock.

Officers provided medical aid to the injured passenger, who was subsequently taken to Ben Taub Hospital in serious condition.

A lookout bulletin was issued for Agurd, who was driving a 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Lt. Jeremy Burkett reported that a trooper attempted to stop the vehicle on I-65 near mile marker 170, but the driver refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit. District Attorney CJ Robinson confirmed that spike strips were used to halt the suspect’s car.

Initially, it was thought that a child was in the vehicle with Agurd, but this was later clarified to be false. The standoff concluded shortly before 3 p.m. with Agurd’s arrest.

Multiple agencies were involved in the standoff, including ALEA troopers, State Bureau of Investigation agents, ALEA’s SWAT team, and deputies from Autauga and Chilton Counties. All lanes of the interstate were temporarily closed during the incident.
