Mobile Takes Flight: Airbus Expands Its Alabama Facility, Elevating the City to Global Aviation Stardom

Airbus officially unveiled its third Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Mobile on Monday, a move that cements the coastal city’s reputation as an international powerhouse in aircraft manufacturing. With this expansion, Mobile now stands proudly among the global giants Seattle, Toulouse, and Hamburg as the fourth-largest aircraft production hub in the world.

A Milestone for Mobile and for Modern Aviation

The gleaming new facility will focus on assembling A320-series aircraft, the sleek, single-aisle jetliner that quietly made aviation history this month by surpassing Boeing’s 737 as the best-selling commercial airplane ever built.

This expansion effectively doubles Mobile’s A320 output, giving Airbus the capacity to roll out up to 16 A320s per month. When combined with production of A220-series jets, the sprawling Alabama campus could soon be delivering around 20 aircraft monthly, a feat that places Mobile squarely on the global aerospace map.

“The growth to this final assembly line has been made in record time,” said Robin Hayes, chairman and CEO of Airbus North America. “That is incredible.”

And indeed, it is. From breaking ground to full operational readiness, Airbus managed to bring this expansion to life at a pace that mirrors the efficiency and precision the company is known for in the skies.

Backed by Local Investment and Big Ambitions

The project didn’t take flight on its own. It was fueled by over $51 million in state and local tax incentives, reflecting a strong partnership between Airbus and Alabama’s economic development leaders. That collaboration has turned what was once an ambitious dream into a living, humming symbol of Southern industrial progress.

What’s Next for Airbus in Mobile

Currently, the team in Mobile is assembling an A320 aircraft destined for United Airlines, set for delivery early next year, a fitting debut for the new facility’s production line.

For Airbus, this expansion isn’t just about scaling up. It’s about anchoring the future of aviation in American soil, nurturing skilled jobs, and ensuring that Mobile remains a cornerstone of global aircraft innovation for decades to come.

In the words of many who’ve witnessed the transformation firsthand, Mobile isn’t just making airplanes anymore. It’s making history.
