This Year’s Contestants
This year’s competition features 51 contestants vying for the national title. Among them is Diane Westhoven, Miss Alabama USA 2024. Westhoven, from Vestavia Hills, is currently pursuing a degree to become a physician assistant at Auburn University.
Historical Wins
Alabama has seen Miss USA success before; Sylvia Hitchcock won the title in 1967 while representing Alabama. Hitchcock went on to claim the Miss Universe crown the same year. Although she wasn’t originally from Alabama, her win brought notable attention to the state.
Recent Controversies
The Miss USA and Miss Teen USA organizations have faced significant controversy recently. In May 2023, both Miss USA, Noelia Voigt, and Miss Teen USA, UmaSofia Srivastava, resigned from their titles. Voigt’s role was taken over by first runner-up Savannah Gankiewicz, while the Miss Teen USA position remains vacant.
The resignations, a historic first for Miss USA, cast a long shadow over the Miss Universe organization, which oversees both pageants. Voigt cited mental health issues and a non-disclosure agreement as reasons for her departure, while Srivastava cited misalignment with the organization’s direction. Reports surfaced detailing complaints about a "toxic work environment," leading to public criticism and defense statements from Miss USA’s CEO, Laylah Rose.
Rose has publicly denied the allegations, asserting that any such behavior would be promptly addressed.
