Memories of Riverchase Galleria: Shoppers Share Their Favorite Moments as Hoover Looks to the Future
Relive the cherished memories of Hoover's Riverchase Galleria, from sweet treats at Cindy’s Cinnamon Rolls to celebrity encounters, as Hoover plans for the mall’s future.
When you think of Hoover’s Riverchase Galleria, what comes to mind? For many, it's the scent of cinnamon rolls, the magic of Christmas shopping, and those unexpected celebrity sightings that make the Galleria an unforgettable experience.
Recently, the iconic Macy’s store—the last one in Alabama—was listed for sale, sparking nostalgia among local residents. We asked them to share their fondest memories of the Riverchase Galleria.
For many, a trip to Cindy’s Cinnamon Rolls was a must. Donna Stack Wiggins, one such shopper, reminisced about her weekend shopping adventures with her mother and sister. These trips always ended with a sweet reward—one of Cindy’s famous cinnamon rolls for the drive back home.
“Going there was like a mini day trip,” she shared, highlighting the specialness of the experience.
Interestingly, Hoover’s Cindy’s Cinnamon Rolls is now the only location left in the United States, making it a true gem for those with a sweet tooth.
Others recalled the joy of riding the carousel at the heart of the food court, or watching the mesmerizing fountain that once graced the same spot. Since its grand opening in 1986, the mall, once hailed as Alabama’s largest shopping destination, has been a go-to for holiday shopping.
Rodney Gaskin, a former visitor, vividly remembered making the drive from Huntsville during the Christmas season of that first year.
“Such a wonderful sight to see!” he wrote, reflecting on the magic of the season.
Former mall employee Darryl Weatherspoon also shared his memories of the festive atmosphere during his five years working at a call center inside the Galleria.
“I remember the wonderful Christmas music during the holiday season,” he recalled. “The Alabama Symphony Orchestra and chorus put on an amazing concert at the Riverchase Galleria.”
Over the years, the mall has hosted its fair share of celebrities, adding to its allure. Chris Moore shared his excitement about a chance encounter with the guitarist of his favorite band while waiting for a popcorn order.
“Kinda freaked me out,” he admitted. “He was killing time while waiting on their gear to be shipped ‘across the pond.’”
Stefanie Elliot Bamberg also had her brush with fame, recalling her time working at Mori Classics in high school and meeting a few celebrities who stopped by.
As Hoover plans for the future of the Riverchase Galleria, these memories remind us of the mall’s rich history and the joy it has brought to so many over the years.
