Expectations for new Arizona QB coach Lyle Moevao

After three years as an offensive analyst under new Arizona head coach Brent Brennan at San Jose State, Lyle Moevao is stepping into his first full-time role as the Wildcats' quarterback coach for the 2024 season. Both Moevao and Brennan have ties to Oregon State.

Moevao ranks in the top 10 in several passing categories in Oregon State history. Had it not been for a season-ending injury after just one pass attempt in 2009, he might have been among the top five in multiple categories. Over approximately a season and a half, Moevao amassed 3,410 passing yards, placing him 10th in Oregon State history.

Moevao's career spans both playing and coaching. Following his time at Oregon State, he played for the La Courneuve Flash in France in 2011 and the Elecom Kobe Finies in Japan in 2012 before retiring from playing. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for quality control at Oregon State from 2013 to 2016.

His first full-time coaching position was as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Division III Lewis & Clark from 2017 to 2018. Moevao then served as the running backs coach with the San Antonio Commanders in the Alliance of American Football in 2019, followed by a similar role and recruiting coordinator position at Northern Colorado in 2020.

During Moevao's tenure at San Jose State with Brennan, the Spartans led the Mountain West with an average of 272.5 passing yards per game in 2022. As he joins Arizona, Moevao is focusing on building trust with quarterback Noah Fifita, who will be adapting to a new offense in 2024.
