Expectations for Arizona Run Game Coordinator and OL Coach Josh Oglesby
Josh Oglesby joins the Arizona coaching staff after a four-year tenure as the offensive line coach at San Jose State under Brent Brennan. Oglesby's coaching career began as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Wisconsin, from 2013 to 2014. He then moved on to roles as a quality control assistant, starting with Oregon State, where he also worked alongside Brennan. From there, Oglesby spent time at Texas El Paso in 2018 as an offensive quality control assistant and was the assistant offensive line coach for the Seattle Sea Dragons in the XFL in 2019.
During his time at San Jose State, Oglesby helped offensive lineman Jack Snyder earn first-team All-Mountain West honors in 2020. Under his guidance, the Spartans consistently ranked among the top teams in the Mountain West for yards per carry, leading the conference with an average of 5.58 yards per carry in 2023.
San Jose State's quarterback protection was notably strong in Oglesby’s first two seasons, with the team ranking second in the Mountain West for sack allowance, giving up just 1.00 sack per game in 2020 and 1.83 in 2021. However, their performance declined in the subsequent seasons, with the team ranking 10th in 2022 (3.50 sacks per game) and 5th in 2023 (1.54 sacks per game).
For Arizona in 2024, the offensive line will be led by right tackle Jonah Savaiinaea, with Ryan Stewart, a transfer from San Jose State, projected to start as the right guard. The Wildcats return a seasoned offensive line, having finished 44th in rushing yards per game (4.56) and 69th in sacks allowed per game (2.00) in 2023. To make progress in 2024, improvements are needed in both average yards per carry and sacks allowed per game.
