Discover Alabama: 6 Unique Spots to Impress Out-of-Towners
Discover six unique and incredible places to visit in Alabama. Perfect for impressing out-of-town guests, these hidden gems will make anyone fall in love with Alabama.
Whenever friends and family from out of state visit Alabama, I love showing them spots that make them say, “Wait, this is in Alabama?” Our state is filled with hidden gems that shatter any preconceived notions and make visitors fall in love with Alabama. Here are six extraordinary places to take out-of-towners that aren't the usual tourist hotspots like the U.S. Space & Rocket Center or the Alabama Gulf Coast.
1. Rattlesnake Saloon - Tuscumbia
One of the most unique destinations in Alabama is the Rattlesnake Saloon. This incredible venue is a combination of a bar, restaurant, and live music spot nestled inside a cave. Visitors park and then take a shuttle to the entrance, where a breathtaking experience awaits. It's a local favorite and a must-see for anyone looking for a memorable outing. (Note: Check the schedule as the saloon is not open during the coldest winter months or during bad weather.)
2. Dismals Canyon - Phil Campbell
Dismals Canyon is a hidden gem that feels like a world of its own. This National Natural Landmark boasts stunning walking trails, waterfalls, and natural bridges. The real highlight, however, is the Dismalites—tiny bioluminescent creatures that create a magical light show. Be sure to check the hours since the canyon is on private land and not always open to the public.
3. Spectre - Millbrook
Spectre, the fictional town from the 2003 movie “Big Fish,” still stands on Jackson Lake Island. Visitors can explore the remnants of the movie set and even interact with the friendly goats that roam the area. Make sure to confirm access before heading out, as bad weather can sometimes limit entry.
4. Wilderness Park/Bamboo Forest - Prattville
Few people know that Alabama is home to a bamboo forest, but Prattville's Wilderness Park offers this unexpected delight. Established in the 1940s, the bamboo here can grow up to 60 feet tall, providing a serene and cool walking trail that’s perfect for escaping the summer heat.
5. Bat Cave - Scottsboro
Just west of Scottsboro, you can witness the largest bat emergence east of the Mississippi River at Sauta Cave. Around sunset, over 250,000 gray bats take to the sky. While the cave itself is protected and off-limits, the viewing area offers a spectacular sight. Bring a rain jacket or poncho with a hood for the best experience.
6. Jules J. Berta Vineyards - Albertville
For a taste of local wine and a cozy atmosphere, visit Jules J. Berta Vineyards in Albertville. The wine is exceptional (try the wine slushie flight), and the pizza is among the best in the state. The vineyard offers a charming setting with plenty of shade and a relaxed vibe, making it feel like a slice of Europe right here in Alabama.
