The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized a rule requiring the replacement of all lead water pipes in the U.S., which could impose up to $90 billion in costs on utility ratepayers.

The Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) mandates that drinking water systems eliminate lead pipes within the next decade, a significant move in President Biden's effort to remove lead from American homes. While a November 2023 estimate suggested the initiative might cost utility companies around $30 billion, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) warns that the total could reach $90 billion, with these costs likely passed on to consumers.
