Western Kentucky Coach Reflects on Alabama Game and Plans for Upcoming Matches
Western Kentucky coach Tyson Helton discusses the team's performance against Alabama after a tough loss, analyzing key plays and looking ahead to future games.
Western Kentucky's head coach, Tyson Helton, had high hopes for his team in their Saturday game against Alabama. Before the game, Helton mentioned in a news interview that he was looking for small victories to boost the Hilltoppers' performance. Unfortunately, Alabama dominated the game with a 63-0 win, making it a tough day for WKU.
Helton acknowledged that his team did a few good things, especially in the first half, where they managed to move the ball. However, turnovers, especially interceptions, proved costly. The defense struggled with Alabama's explosive plays in the first half but found some rhythm in the second half. However, the offense couldn't keep up.
Alabama's offense was unstoppable, racking up 600 yards. Quarterback Jalen Milroe threw only nine passes but made the most of them, completing seven for 200 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 79 yards and added two more touchdowns.
WKU, on the other hand, only managed 145 yards. Quarterback TJ Finley threw two interceptions, both caught by Alabama's Keon Sabb. Finley was replaced by Caden Veltkamp in the second half.
Helton explained that one of Finley's interceptions might not have been his fault. He believed it was more about timing and route execution. Despite the struggles, Helton is optimistic. He sees the game against Alabama as a learning experience that will help WKU prepare for future, more winnable games.
WKU will have a chance to bounce back in their upcoming home game against Eastern Kentucky, an FCS opponent. Helton is eager to see how his team responds and is looking forward to their first home game.
Next, Alabama will face USF at Bryant-Denny Stadium, while WKU will take on EKU in Bowling Green.
