The untimely passing of University of Alabama student Lauren Alexis Whinery last month has inspired the creation of a $50,000 scholarship fund in her memory.

As of August 18, 95 contributors have collectively raised $9,220 through a GoFundMe campaign dedicated to Whinery, who was 20 years old and pursued a major in marketing along with dual minors in sales and global and cultural perspectives.

A resident of Cape Coral, Florida, Whinery graduated with high honors from Prairie High School in Iowa in 2022, as noted in her obituary.

The GoFundMe campaign emphasizes Whinery’s outstanding academic performance at the University of Alabama, highlighting her achievement of being named to the President’s List for the Spring 2024 semester—a distinction awarded to students with a perfect 4.0 GPA. This honor placed Whinery among the university’s top scholars, reflecting her dedication and intelligence.

The Lauren Whinery Scholarship Fund will provide annual support to a deserving student at the University of Alabama and will also contribute to Prairie High School in Iowa.

Whinery was actively involved in various organizations, including the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, Delta Sigma Pi, Professional Women in Communication and Business, Globe UA, and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, as detailed on the GoFundMe page.

Her sorority chapter’s tribute highlights her genuine concern for others and her commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all members.

According to the family’s obituary, the final of three memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on August 24 at the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority house in Tuscaloosa.
