In 2028, may Birmingham serve as a launching pad for the next generation of American gymnastics stars?
Quietly brave and full of Southern grit, Birmingham, Alabama, may soon bring America's next generation of Olympic gymnastics champions to the world stage. The 2028 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials, a major competition that determines which athletes will vault, tumble, and balance their way onto Team USA ahead of the Summer Games in Los Angeles, is officially being considered for the Magic City as one of four finalists.

Birmingham might be the boldest name on the shortlist, even though it is not the biggest.
The Bid That Might Bring South Olympic Dreams
Eventive Sports' president, Gene Hallman, who is leading the bid, told AL.com that he is "fairly optimistic" that Birmingham would win the award. The Olympic committee and USA Gymnastics are anticipated to make a final judgment as early as this summer.
"Not only for Birmingham, but for the Southeast area overall, this may be significant," Hallman stated. We have demonstrated our ability to hold top-notch events. We are prepared for the upcoming task.
That assurance is not unwarranted. The World Games 2022, a massive international sporting event that temporarily turned Birmingham into a global center, was when Hallman had his epiphany. He gave USA Gymnastics representatives a tour of the city's facilities around that time, and their enthusiastic comments stoked the idea that would eventually grow into a legitimate Olympic candidacy.
Birmingham put its hat in the ring after Hallman said the support from USA Gymnastics was much greater after attending the 2024 gymnastics trials in Minneapolis.
Big Potential in a Small City
To be honest, Birmingham is not frequently brought up with cities like Los Angeles, New York, or even Minneapolis. But it might benefit from being the underdog.
It is accessible, to start. Families, gymnasts, and fans could all easily make the trip because the city is only a three-hour drive from more than 20 million people. Additionally, holding high-stakes competitions is nothing new. Birmingham has often demonstrated its ability to put on a show, from NCAA tournaments to college football championships.
The SEC Gymnastics Championship was recently held in Legacy Arena, the city's crown jewel. It is a perfect choice for an event of this size because of its modern renovations and convenient location.
The Financial Risks
Hosting the Olympic trials might have significant economic benefits in addition to the spectacular leotards and gravity-defying flips. More than $70 million in local economic activity was reportedly produced by the 2024 testing in Minneapolis. Hallman expects the impact will be comparable, if not greater, in Birmingham.
The city also benefited from the World Games, which, despite costing $66 million to host, generated an estimated $165 million in economic benefits. Hallman stated that talks with both public and private partners are in progress and that many local leaders are already on board, even though he was unable to provide an exact cost for the 2028 gymnastics trials at this time.
I am still awaiting City Hall.
The mayor's office has not yet issued an official statement regarding the bid. However, Hallman claims that there is "substantial support" going on behind the scenes, including promises of cooperation from local and governmental organizations.
It would be more than simply another athletic event if Birmingham were to win the bid. It would be a chance to be seen nationally, a call to dream, and a significant chance to motivate the next Simone Biles or Suni Lee—possibly from Alabama itself.
The Judgment? Hopeful.
The city waits for now.
However, a cautious optimism permeates the air in the center of Birmingham, where steel meets soul and legacy lives in quiet resolve. There was a feeling that this underdog city, which is tough, persistent, and yearning for greatness, might just make it.
