HBO Max to Crack Down on Password Sharing New $8 Monthly Fee Starts Sept. 1

If you’ve been generously sharing your HBO Max login with friends or family outside your home, you might want to prepare for a change and a new monthly charge

HBO Max to Crack Down on Password Sharing New $8 Monthly Fee Starts Sept. 1

Starting September 1, HBO Max will begin more actively enforcing its policy against password sharing. While the platform has technically had a sharing fee in place for some time, it hasn’t been strictly applied. That’s about to change.

According to Fortune, subscribers who still want to let people outside their household access their account will have to pay an extra $8 per month. This means your binge-watch buddy across town can still keep watching  but you’ll need to budget for it.

HBO Max isn’t the first streaming service to tighten the reins on account sharing. Netflix made headlines in 2023 for introducing similar measures, which ended up boosting new subscriptions. The move suggests a growing industry trend: platforms are looking for new ways to turn shared viewers into paying customers.

For now, HBO Max subscribers have until the start of September to decide whether to keep their account private or pay the extra fee to keep their long-distance streaming circle intact.
