Discover the Charm of Waverly, Alabama: 5 Must-Visit Spots

Nestled between Lee and Chambers counties in east-central Alabama, Waverly is a hidden gem that you might miss if you’re not paying attention. With a post office, around 150 residents, and no traffic lights, this tiny town is a delightful departure from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Located just 15 minutes northwest of Auburn along U.S. 280, Waverly offers a unique charm that makes it worth a detour. Whether you have a brief stopover or a leisurely afternoon, Waverly's delicious eateries, welcoming locals, and quirky shops promise a memorable experience.

Here’s a guide to five of our favorite spots in this quaint town:

1. Wild Flour Bakery

For those in the know, Wild Flour Bakery’s daily sandwich specials are a hot commodity, available only at opening time, 10 a.m. If you’re too late for the specials, fear not; their pastry selection is full of mouthwatering options like raspberry turnovers, key lime tarts, and jalapeno cheddar kolaches. Founded by Sarah Jones in Tallassee, the bakery recently relocated to Waverly, joining forces with Standard Deluxe. Due to its growing popularity, the bakery is expanding to a new location on Patrick Street, with plans to open by September.

2. Fig & Wasp

Founded by Meredith Frye and her mother, Scout, Fig & Wasp is an antique shop that has been captivating visitors for four years. The store’s name reflects the symbiotic relationship between figs and wasps, symbolizing the shop's blend of diverse and complementary offerings. Browse through antique furniture, handcrafted pottery, imported rugs, and more, from garden tools to travel accessories.

3. The Waverly Local

A local favorite since Andy Anderson and Christian Watson opened it over six years ago, The Waverly Local combines Southern hospitality with culinary excellence. Housed in a historic building that once hosted Waverly’s Yellow Hammer Restaurant, this spot offers a nostalgic atmosphere and a menu that features delights like bacon-wrapped Wickles Pickles okra, pimento cheese with sourdough frybread, and a unique braised pork and collard green lasagna.

4. Era Waverly

Era Waverly is a vintage lover's dream, showcasing retro items from fondue pots to Formica tables and vinyl chairs. Stepping into this shop feels like a journey back to the 1960s and 70s. The store also hosts a street market throughout the year, featuring vintage vendors, food trucks, live music, and more, making it a lively spot for both shopping and entertainment.

5. Standard Deluxe

Scott Peek’s Standard Deluxe has been a cornerstone of Waverly since 1991, earning national acclaim for its graphic design and screen-printing. The business also hosts the "Old 280” Boogie festival in the spring and fall, celebrating music, food, and culture. Don’t miss out on a Standard Deluxe T-shirt or trucker hat, available in their gift shop.
