Chip English Appointed Interim Coach for Hoover Football Team Following Drew Gilmer's Administrative Leave
Former Albertville head coach Chip English named interim coach at Hoover High School after Drew Gilmer and Adam Helms were placed on administrative leave following a social media controversy.
Chip English, former head football coach at Albertville, has been appointed as the interim coach for Hoover High School after head coach Drew Gilmer was placed on administrative leave.
English had resigned from Albertville before the start of the 2023 season after serving as the head coach for two years. He then took on the role of quarterback coach at Hoover. During his tenure at Albertville, English's record was 2-18. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Grissom from 2017 to 2020, achieving a 16-25 record and leading the team to the playoffs once.
The administrative leave of Gilmer, along with defensive coordinator Adam Helms, was announced by Hoover City Schools superintendent Kevin Maddox. This decision follows the circulation of a video on social media that allegedly shows inappropriate conduct by Hoover coaches during practice.
Drew Gilmer was hired from Clay-Chalkville in January to succeed Wade Waldrop. Gilmer's impressive track record includes eight years at Clay-Chalkville, where he won two of the last three Class 6A titles and posted an 81-12 record. His 2023 team had an undefeated season, going 14-0 and securing a championship victory over Saraland.
The Hoover Bucs are set to kick off their season in a national showcase on August 24 against Western, Florida.
