Birmingham double shooting leaves 1 man dead, another injured; 1 in custody

One man was killed and another injured in a double shooting Wednesday night in southwest Birmingham, according to police.

Shortly after 6 p.m., officers from the West Precinct responded to reports of a shooting in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue SW, as stated by Officer Truman Fitzgerald. Upon arrival, they found one man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and another lying on the sidewalk with a critical injury.

Community members were already assisting one victim when officers took over life-saving measures, Fitzgerald noted.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived shortly after and transported both men to UAB Hospital, where the critically injured man later died from his wounds.

Initial investigations indicate that all individuals involved in the shooting were acquainted. Fitzgerald explained that the conflict appeared to have arisen from an argument involving the deceased victim and a third man, who was not shot during the incident. “This was an event where the suspect and victims knew each other,” he said.

A person of interest was detained at the scene and is scheduled for questioning at police headquarters. Detectives are still assessing this individual's role in the incident.

Fitzgerald urged the public to come forward with any additional information, encouraging them to contact CrimeStoppers, where tips can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
