Alabama's State Parks Getting Upgrades: What’s New and What’s Coming

Alabama is investing in its state parks with exciting upgrades. Next month, construction will start on a new $25 million hotel at Cheaha State Park, the highest point in Alabama. This hotel will offer stunning views and will be built using large timbers from the state, creating a beautiful wood, metal, and glass design.

This hotel is just one part of a bigger plan to modernize Alabama’s 22 state parks. The total project cost is around $150 million, funded by an $80 million bond approved by voters in 2022 and other sources.

State Parks Commissioner Chris Blankenship explained that many parks haven't been updated for years, and the goal is to make them more appealing to today's visitors. For example, Oak Mountain State Park has received a $13 million upgrade, including new camping facilities and a versatile pavilion.

Other completed projects include 20 new cabins at Gulf State Park and repairs to the Gulf State Park pier, which was damaged by Hurricane Sally.

Current improvements are happening at Lakepoint State Park, Guntersville State Park, Monte Sano State Park, and Meaher State Park. Wind Creek State Park is also getting an $11.5 million upgrade, with new cottages and a revamped campground.

At Cheaha State Park, along with the new hotel, campgrounds and cabins are being updated. The goal is to attract more visitors and generate revenue to keep the parks in great shape.

Overall, these updates are set to transform Alabama’s state parks, making them more enjoyable and sustainable for future generations.
