A new distribution center is added to the community food bank's footprint.
In preparation for its spring 2026 opening, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama has started building a new, larger distribution center in Bessemer. The new building, which is twice as large as the one in Birmingham, will boost productivity, expand food storage, and simplify distribution over 12 counties.

"The efficiency of this larger building will enable us get more food to our community," said CEO Nicole Williams, underscoring the necessity of growth. A sizable freezer, several shipping ramps, and sections specifically designated for volunteers are also features of the renovated facility.
The food bank currently distributes two million pounds of food each month to families experiencing financial difficulties who are not eligible for federal assistance. However, supplies have been slashed due to USDA funding cuts, resulting in the loss of around 3 million pounds of food, or 2.6 million meals.
In order to combat this, the food bank is looking for donations, with the goal of raising $7 million to finish its $31.5 million project. The organization, which has 57 employees and hundreds of volunteers, is still dedicated to ending hunger.
We may not solve hunger in our lifetime, but we will keep working toward it," Williams said in closing.
