Florida high school football player dies after collapsing on field
Chance Gainer, an 18-year-old senior football player at Port St. Joe High School in Florida, has tragically passed away after collapsing on the field during a game on Friday, as confirmed by school officials.
Gulf District Schools Superintendent Jim Norton expressed the deep sorrow of the community, stating, "The tragic loss of Chance Gainer, a senior at Port St. Joe High School, has left us all in profound grief. He was an exceptional athlete, a cherished teammate, and a remarkable young man who had a deep love for Jesus."
Gainer collapsed during the third quarter of the game against Liberty County High School, which took place in Bristol, Florida. Liberty County Superintendent of Schools Kyle Peddie reported that Gainer was transported by ambulance to Calhoun Liberty Hospital, where he later passed away. After the game, Liberty County players were informed of the tragic news. Peddie noted that counselors would be available Monday morning to support students in need.
Port St. Joe High School Principal Sissy Godwin remembered Gainer as a quiet yet warm presence, saying, "Though you might not have heard Chance in the crowd, his smile was visible from across the room."
In the wake of this tragedy, school staff, friends, and local clergy gathered at Port St. Joe High School. Norton asked the community to keep Chance's family in their thoughts and prayers, saying, "Please remember Chance's parents, J.J. and Gal Gainer, along with his siblings, extended family, friends, teammates, and coaches during this incredibly difficult time. We want the Gainer family to know they are not alone in their grief."
