Who Really Runs DOGE?
During an interview with CNN’s Brianna Keilar, Miller was asked about the leadership of DOGE and who is responsible for its administration. He responded by stating that President Donald Trump ultimately oversees DOGE, though he does not personally handle its operations.
The confusion stems from Musk’s recent visit to the White House, where he made statements regarding DOGE in a way that suggested an authoritative role. During the discussions, Musk mentioned that “our actions are maximally transparent” and “we are trying to be as transparent as possible”, prompting further speculation about his position.
When pressed on whether Musk himself believed he was leading DOGE, Miller emphasized the structure of government:
“The president runs the government and appoints advisors—including Elon, myself, and many others. Those advisors, in turn, help execute the president’s directives across federal agencies. That’s how democracy functions.”
Despite Miller’s clarification, the precise leadership of DOGE remains somewhat unclear.
Trump’s Initial Announcement
Back in November, President Trump had publicly announced that both Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy were selected to lead DOGE.
“I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency,” Trump stated in December.
However, Ramaswamy withdrew from the role just hours after Trump’s inauguration on January 20, leaving questions about DOGE’s leadership unresolved.
As of now, it remains uncertain who is actively managing the initiative, but official White House statements confirm that Musk is not directly in charge.
